Charleston, WV – Beyond The Backyard and the National Wild Turkey Federation is excited to announce that they are holding a JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) Field Day at Coonskin Park in Charleston on Saturday, August 14th, 2010. All children must arrive at 8:00 a.m. for registration. The event will officially begin at 9:00 a.m. The gathering is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided by local vendors and restaurants.

Several state organizations will be on-hand to teach children about different aspects of the outdoor experience. There will be archery, BB gun shooting, fly tying and casting, turkey calling, trapping, ATV safety and a class on how to start hunting with your children. Members of Beyond The Backyard, Trout Unlimited, Putnam County Gun Club, West Virginia Bowhunters Association, National Wild Turkey Federation and the West Virginia Trappers Association are all taking part in this statewide event.

“These events are not only fun, but educational,” said Bobby Warner, founder of Beyond The Backyard. “The goal of this event is to teach parents and children a skill that they can continue to use and enjoy throughout their lives.”

It is required that a parent or guardian accompany their children throughout the event. For more information about the event, visit Beyond The Backyard’s website at www.beyondthebackyard.org.

“This is the first event where we have collaborated with several state organizations to share their passion for the outdoors,” said Chris Walls, director of Beyond The Backyard. “It is always rewarding to see all of the children learning and growing their skills in the outdoors.”
